Abstract

Amid the challenges of Indonesian nationhood, marked by rising intolerance and social polarization, peace education has become an unavoidable urgency. Islamic education, as the moral foundation of the majority of the nation, is often confronted with a dilemma between a formalistic-ritualistic approach detached from social realities and the urgent need to respond to issues of injustice. This article aims to formulate a conceptual framework of “Grounded Peace Education” by synthesizing Ahmad Syafii Maarif’s Islamic-humanist vision with Johan Galtung’s theory of Positive Peace. Using a qualitative literature review through a conceptual synthesis approach, the thoughts of both figures are analyzed in depth to discover fundamental points of convergence and to construct a more comprehensive educational model. The synthesis reveals that Syafii Maarif’s vision of substantive Islam—emphasizing authentic morality, social justice, and universal humanity—is functionally aligned with Galtung’s concept of Positive Peace, which seeks the elimination of structural and cultural violence. The resulting model of “Grounded Peace Education” transcends the goal of negative peace (mere absence of direct conflict). Instead, it seeks to shape learners into proactive agents of change, capable of critically analyzing and dismantling the roots of systemic injustice and cultural justifications of violence, as an authentic manifestation of faith and a form of responsible citizenship.
